BOGARD-SELDON ROAD CORRIDOR (updated 11/16/24)

Public Comments Due: December 3rd, 2024

The MSB and Alaska DOT have drafted a Bogard-Seldon Corridor Access Management Plan (CAMP) and it is out for public review. To review the plan and submit your comments, please visit this MSB Web Page.  The plan outlines several important safety improvements along this corridor and proposes changing how driveways and streets connect into Bogard or Seldon Roads. Right now, the number of access points is creating dangerous traffic conflicts.

Please join us next Thursday, November 21st at the NLCC Membership Meeting to help us shape the feedback we will provide as your community council.

On a related note, the NLCC prepared a Bogard-Seldon Road Corridor Resolution last June and submitted it to the Borough and State. We are pleased to see some of our recommendations being acted upon.

CENTRAL GRAVEL PRODUCTS – CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT (updated 11/14/24)

Update: 11/14: The MSB Planning Staff is recommending a decision by the Planning Commission be postponed until sometime in December to allow time for updates to the application and for DOT to finalize position on Bogard driveway.

Update: 10/29: A new gravel extraction operation is being proposed by Central Gravel Products. The location is to the East of Engstrom and North of Bogard. The NLCC gathered input on-line, in-person, and at our September and October Membership Meetings. Yesterday, we submitted NLCC Resolution 24-002 to the Mat-Su Borough. The resolution supports the development, but only with a number of conditions that we recommend to mitigate community concerns. A Mailchimp email was sent out yesterday to our subscribers and posted on several neighborhood Facebook pages.

The NLCC will attend the Planning Commission hearing on 11/18/24 and speak about those concerns and recommendations.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS (posted 10/29/24)

Two new Board Members were elected at our October Membership Meeting.

Joining the Board as Vice President is Colleen Vague. Colleen has a strong background in public service and has served on the School Board and on the MSB Planning Commission.

Also joining the Board as Secretary is Nichole Smith. Nichole also has past Board experience, having served as Vice President of the Denali Booster Club and more recently on the Mat Su School District Citizen’s Library Advisory Committee.

We welcome Colleen and Nichole and also want to offer our sincere thanks to Rachel Greenberg and Pat Purcell as they rotate out of their respective Board terms. Both will remain actively involved in support of NLCC priorities.

Further information on the NLCC Board and our Bylaws can be found here.

RADAR SPEED SIGN DATA (posted 9/26/24)

The NLCC owns three radar speed signs. We deploy them to areas where residents express concerns with excessive speeding. Data gathered shows a clear picture of excessive speeding in these neighborhoods. Results of recent radar sign deployments have been sent to Senator Wilson’s office. He indicated his intent to follow up with State of Alaska officials to encourage increased enforcement action. We also forwarded this information to the Mat Su Borough Planning and Public Works Directors hoping the data could be useful in future “traffic calming” design and road modifications to improve neighborhood safety.

BECOME A VOTING MEMBER! (posted 9/26/24)

The NLCC would love to have your more direct participation and input. We welcome all residents to our monthly meetings, and we encourage residents to become voting members to have more influence on our decisions and positions we advocate with the Mat Su Borough and other entities. To become a voting member for 2024, please complete the attached 2024 Membership Form and send it to the president@nlakes.cc email address. Membership in 2024 requires a $10 dues payment. We are revising our Bylaws to eliminate dues starting 1/1/25.

MOBILE HOME PARKS (updated 10/23/24)

Still not resolved with Borough Assembly. After the elimination of the Mobile Home Park codes, there remains concern that trailers or other premanufactured housing units could be assembled into a “trailer park type” development under the MSB code for multi family housing. New legislation has been proposed by Assembly members Nower and Hale to address the confusion. Assembly member Hale’s proposal would establish a public hearing process for proposed multi family developments. Both draft ordinances have been referred to the Planning Commission. We expect they will take action in November on these proposals.
